Andrew Cawley disappeared in the days after he was last seen in the Aloha Estates area of Puna, on the morning of December 23, 2020. When family and friends realized they had not seen or heard from him for several days, he was reported missing on December 28, 2020, setting off a search that quickly shifted from worry to dread.
That fear hardened into something worse on January 5, 2021, when investigators found his body buried in a shallow grave on his Aloha Estates property.
The remains were exhumed and taken to Hilo Medical Center, and police indicated he appeared to have been buried for more than a week. Because of the condition of the remains, identification was made through a comparison of dental records, and the case was classified as a second-degree murder.
For months, the killing lingered as an unsolved neighborhood horror, one that seemed to have unfolded close to home and then been deliberately concealed. The investigation continued in the background, with detectives working to reconstruct what happened after Cawley was last seen and how his body ended up hidden in the ground.
Nearly a year later, the case broke open. Police arrested Donald John Needham, a neighbor in the Aloha Estates community, and on December 14, 2021, after conferring with prosecutors, charged him with second-degree murder in Cawley’s death. Authorities said Needham was being held in lieu of $1 million bail, with an initial court appearance set for December 15, 2021.
Within days, prosecutors took the case to a grand jury, and on December 16, 2021, Needham was indicted on the same second-degree murder charge, moving the matter into circuit court. Public reporting later indicated he pleaded not guilty and that a trial date was set, marking the transition from investigation to courtroom reckoning as the community waited to learn what evidence would be used to explain the killing and the burial that followed.
