On July 28, 1960, Officer Doris Wayne Barber of the Sitka Police Department in Alaska was fatally shot while attempting to serve legal papers at a mobile home. Upon knocking on the door, the occupant opened fire with a rifle, striking Officer Barber in the chest. An unarmed, off-duty officer accompanying him called for backup, but upon arrival, the police found that the suspect had committed suicide.
