On July 6, 2015, in Selawik, Alaska, 23-year-old Wade Cleveland was fatally shot during a violent incident involving 39-year-old Christopher Cleveland. The altercation began in the early morning hours when Christopher Cleveland, after consuming alcohol with a group at his residence, became involved in a physical dispute with his girlfriend. When Wade intervened to de-escalate the situation, Christopher retrieved a firearm and began shooting, resulting in Wade's death.
Following the shooting, Christopher Cleveland barricaded himself inside his home, leading to a standoff with law enforcement that lasted until approximately 2:30 PM, when he surrendered. He was subsequently indicted by a Kotzebue Grand Jury on charges including first-degree murder, attempted murder, assault, and burglary. In September 2016, a jury convicted him of first-degree murder and multiple other charges.
This tragic event highlighted the severe impact of alcohol-related violence in rural Alaskan communities and underscored the challenges faced by law enforcement in responding to such incidents in remote areas.
