On July 6, 2015, in Selawik, Alaska, 23-year-old Wade Cleveland was fatally shot during a violent incident involving 39-year-old Christopher Cleveland. The altercation began in the early morning hours when Christopher Cleveland, after consuming alcohol with a group at his residence, became involved in a physical dispute with his girlfriend. When Wade intervened to de-escalate the situation, Christopher retrieved a firearm and began shooting, resulting in Wade's death.
