On June 16, 2022, a tragic shooting occurred at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church in Vestavia Hills, Alabama, during a "Boomers Potluck" dinner. Among the victims was 75-year-old Sarah Yeager of Pelham, who succumbed to her injuries at UAB Hospital. The assailant, 70-year-old Robert Findlay Smith, an occasional attendee of the church, opened fire during the event, resulting in the deaths of Yeager, 84-year-old Walter Rainey of Irondale, and 84-year-old Jane Pounds of Hoover.
