On June 16, 2022, 84-year-old Walter "Bart" Rainey attended a potluck dinner at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church in Vestavia Hills, Alabama. During the event, a fellow attendee, 70-year-old Robert Findlay Smith, unexpectedly opened fire, fatally shooting Rainey and two other congregants: Sarah Yeager, 75, and Jane Pounds, 84. Rainey was pronounced dead at the scene, while Yeager and Pounds succumbed to their injuries at a local hospital.
