A quiet evening potluck for the 'Boomers' group at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church in Vestavia Hills, Alabama, turned into a scene of tragedy on June 16, 2022. Among the members gathered for fellowship was 84-year-old Walter 'Bart' Rainey, a white male and a beloved husband of 61 years. That evening, Rainey and other parishioners noticed a man sitting by himself and, in a gesture of kindness, invited him to join their table. The man, who identified himself as 'Mr. Smith,' declined the invitations. Shortly after, he produced a handgun and began shooting, shattering the peace of the church hall.
Walter 'Bart' Rainey was fatally wounded at the scene, dying in the arms of his wife, Linda, who was murmuring words of comfort to him. Two other church members, 75-year-old Sarah Yeager and 84-year-old Jane Pounds, were also shot and later died from their injuries. The shooter was quickly subdued by another attendee who heroically struck him with a chair and, with the help of others, held him down until law enforcement arrived. This quick action was credited with saving numerous lives.
The suspect was identified as Robert Findlay Smith, a 70-year-old man who had occasionally attended services at the church. Smith, a licensed firearm dealer, was taken into custody at the scene and later charged with capital murder for the deaths of Rainey, Yeager, and Pounds. The motive for the shooting remained unclear to authorities.
In the months that followed, the legal process unfolded. A grand jury indicted Robert Findlay Smith on capital murder charges. Initially, there were questions regarding his mental state and competency to stand trial, leading to a court-ordered mental evaluation which his defense contested. Ultimately, in May 2023, Smith pleaded guilty to capital murder. In an agreement with the victims' families, who chose to forgo a trial that could have resulted in the death penalty, Smith was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
