On February 8, 2020, 67-year-old Douglas Harold Hart of Irondale, Alabama, was fatally shot during an encounter with Vestavia Hills police officers. Officers responded to a report of an armed individual in the 4400 block of Old Overton Road around 4:20 p.m. Upon arrival, they encountered Hart, who reportedly fired at them, prompting officers to return fire. Hart was pronounced dead at the scene, and one officer sustained injuries but was treated and released from the hospital.
