In the summer of 2021, a domestic tragedy unfolded in Adamsville, Alabama, ending the life of 41-year-old Nakeshia Thalia Biggs-Lowe. A Black/African American female, Nakeshia was a dedicated special education paraprofessional at Midfield High School and a mother to two children, a 14-year-old son and a 6-month-old daughter. She was known as a vibrant and strong-willed person who loved life and lived it to the fullest. On the afternoon of July 25th, she was at her home in the 5500 block of Crestview Drive, preparing for her husband's birthday celebration planned for later that day.
A disagreement between Nakeshia and her husband, Kelvin Dwight Lowe, took a fatal turn. According to a statement Kelvin later gave to investigators, a struggle over a firearm resulted in Nakeshia being accidentally shot. However, the Jefferson County Coroner's Office determined that she died from a gunshot wound to the head. Adamsville Police were called to the scene, and Nakeshia was pronounced dead at 3:07 p.m. Her father, Rufus Biggs, rushed to the home after receiving a call from Kelvin about the shooting, but police had already secured the area, preventing him from reaching his daughter.
Following an investigation into the shooting, Adamsville Police arrested Kelvin Dwight Lowe two days later, on July 27, 2021. He was charged with the murder of his wife. Kelvin was subsequently booked into the Jefferson County Jail, with his bond set at $100,000. Detectives on the case also interviewed a witness who was present at the home at the time of the fatal incident. The community was left to mourn the loss of a beloved educator and mother, as the legal process against her husband began.
