A break in the case came on June 27, 1957, when her car was found abandoned in Denver at the intersection of Colfax Avenue and Elm Street. The discovery of the vehicle, however, did not lead to Nora's whereabouts. The search came to a grim end on July 9, 1957, when her body was discovered in Deer Creek Canyon, about a mile west of Phillipsburg on Colorado State Highway 124.
An investigation into her death determined that she had been the victim of a homicide. The cause of death was attributed to blunt force trauma, and there were indications that her body had been burned.
