Shawny Lee Smith, age 32, of Cheyenne in Laramie County, Wyoming, was found dead on February 7, 2003, in a field just off U.S. Highway 85 in Weld County, Colorado, approximately a quarter mile south of the Wyoming state line.
Investigators determined the female victim, age 32, had been beaten and raped, and that the homicide likely occurred late on the night of February 6 or in the early hours of February 7 before her body was discovered on February 8.
She was last seen alive at the Cowboy South Bar, 317 South Greeley Highway in Cheyenne prior to being found across the state line.
Authorities publicly renewed appeals for information on the 20th anniversary of the killing, directing tips to the Wyoming Division of Criminal Investigation and the Laramie County Sheriff's Office.
