The shooting occurred at around 12:35 a.m., as Cornisha was riding in a car driven by her niece's stepfather, Sam Monroe. It is suspected that the assailants mistakenly targeted Monroe’s car, possibly believing it was associated with the fighting groups due to the gold Ford Taurus having tinted windows and fancy rims. Cornisha was not involved in the disputes, and it is believed that the perpetrators were unaware of who was inside the vehicle when they began shooting.
The drive-by shooting left Cornisha’s family devastated, with many grieving the loss of a young girl who had no ties to gang activities or conflicts. Family members described Cornisha as a bright and loving individual who had big dreams. Her sister Whitney McCowan expressed her sorrow, noting that her best friend and a special person had been taken away senselessly.
