Wayne Bell, aged 26, was found dead on March 20, 2009, in Houston, Texas. He was a victim of homicide in an incident that left few immediate leads for investigators at the time. The case remained unsolved for several years until advancements in DNA technology helped authorities to revisit and analyze evidence from the crime scene.
In 2021, the Houston Police Department's Cold Case Squad reviewed the available evidence, which led to the identification of Jorge Trevino Cardenas through
DNA analysis. Cardenas was later charged and convicted of the murder. He had originally been arrested for an unrelated crime in 2014, during which a DNA sample was collected that ultimately matched blood evidence found at the crime scene. Cardenas, who had been known to carry a long, serrated knife, was found guilty by a jury in 2023 after a four-day trial and subsequently sentenced to life in prison.
