On June 13, 2016, Marcus Cherry, a 16-year-old resident of Houston, Texas, was critically injured in a drive-by shooting outside the Scott Plaza Apartments located at 4235 Barberry. Marcus was with two friends, aged 18 and 20, sitting on the front porch of an apartment building when a dark-colored, four-door sedan with heavily tinted windows approached. The occupants of the car opened fire, striking all three victims.
Marcus was rushed to Memorial Hermann Hospital, where he remained in critical condition before succumbing to his injuries the following day, June 14, 2016. His two friends were also injured but survived the attack and were treated at Ben Taub General Hospital.
Houston police have indicated that they do not yet have a motive or suspects in the case. While investigators have considered the possibility of gang-related activity, there has been no confirmation that this was the reason for the shooting. The tragic loss of Marcus Cherry deeply impacted the community. A GoFundMe campaign was organized to help cover the funeral costs, where Marcus was remembered as an outgoing young man who was a loving son and brother. The police continue to urge anyone with information to come forward in hopes of resolving the case and bringing justice to Marcus's family.
