On January 3, 2017, at approximately 9:30 p.m., 47-year-old Charlie Thomas Bennett Jr. was fatally shot while seated in a vehicle at 1350 Greens Parkway in Houston, Texas. A female passenger, 22-year-old Aukeyanna Simmons, was also wounded in the incident. According to the Houston Police Department, an unknown suspect, who had been sitting in the back seat of the vehicle, opened fire on both occupants before fleeing on foot. Simmons managed to drive to Houston Northwest Medical Center, where Bennett was pronounced dead upon arrival. Simmons received treatment for non-life-threatening injuries.

Bennett, affectionately known as "Pete," was born on July 15, 1969, in Bridgeton, New Jersey, and later relocated to Houston with his family in 1981. He was a dedicated truck driver for B&H Trucking and an active member of Greenhouse International Church. Bennett had a passion for racing cars, particularly his 1969 Mustang, and was a founding member of the "Third Coast Strokers" motorcycle club in Houston. He was known for his joyful personality and devotion to his family, especially his nieces and nephews.

In December 2021, nearly five years after the incident, 30-year-old Javan Oxavia Williams, a member of the Treetop Piru gang, was convicted of Bennett's murder and sentenced to life in prison. Williams had been in the back seat of the vehicle when he shot Bennett in the neck and Simmons in the face before fleeing. During the trial, it was revealed that Williams was also charged with a separate capital murder for the February 2017 killing of Tonius Wayne Frank, further highlighting his violent criminal behavior.
