In May of 2007, the body of 25-year-old Thomas Bellmon was discovered by a jogger on a Monday morning in Philadelphia. He was found on Fisher's Lane, situated between the Fisher's Glen driving range and the Juniata Golf Course. An investigation revealed that Bellmon, a Black male, had been killed by five shotgun blasts. At the time of his death, he was a resident of the 3400 block of Tampa Street in North Philadelphia and was the 149th homicide victim in the city that year.

from Baltimore, where he had spent most of his life, Bellmon had moved back to Philadelphia approximately five years before his death. He was the father of two young children, a 5-year-old son and a 3-year-old daughter. According to his grandmother, Jean Bellmon, he had been enrolled in a program to address some personal problems he was facing.
In the immediate aftermath of the discovery of his body, detectives were working to establish a motive for the slaying. However, details surrounding the circumstances of his death were not readily available, and information about potential suspects was scarce.
