On August 14, 1999, 56-year-old Jurgen Yo Knemeyer was found dead at his home on Hilltop Road in Willits, Mendocino County, California. A Mendocino County Sheriff's Deputy was dispatched for a welfare check after a neighbor reported that the back door of Knemeyer’s home had been open since early morning. Upon entry, the deputy discovered Knemeyer beaten to death, and the incident was immediately classified as a homicide.
