On December 31, 2009, Edwin Ruiz, age 46, was found shot to death on the 3300 block of North Palethorpe Street in Philadelphia. The shooting occurred during the evening hours, and Edwin was pronounced dead at the scene. His death was part of the ongoing violence that plagued Philadelphia at the time, with the city experiencing a high homicide rate in 2009. This year saw a total of 305 homicides, reflecting the severe challenges law enforcement faced in curbing violent crime in the community.
