A Hispanic male, Aviles was standing at the corner of Mascher and Cambria streets shortly before 8 p.m. when he was shot multiple times, including once in the face. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
At the time of his death, law enforcement sources indicated that Aviles was a significant figure within a local drug organization.
His history included numerous prior arrests for drug-related offenses, and he had an open case in the same police district where his life was taken. His murder was the 289th in Philadelphia that year, a period when the city was grappling with a significant rise in homicides and gun violence.
