Juan Maldonado, aged 39, was shot and killed on August 4, 2007, in San Francisco, California. The incident was one of many violent acts connected to gang activity during that period in the city. His death was part of a broader trend of violence that plagued San Francisco's Mission District and other neighborhoods, where gang rivalries led to numerous homicides and criminal activities over several years.

The homicide of Juan Maldonado was later connected to the 19th Street/16th Street Sureños criminal enterprise, a gang that had terrorized the Mission District and other parts of San Francisco for years through murders, drug trafficking, and various other violent acts. In 2024, six members of this gang were sentenced for their roles in multiple cold-case murders, including Maldonado's death. The sentences, ranging from 11 to 32 years in prison, were part of a larger federal investigation aimed at dismantling the Sureños' influence and bringing justice to victims like Maldonado. The sentences provided some measure of closure to the families affected by the violence that spanned from 2006 to 2013.

The San Francisco Police Department has continued its efforts to solve cold cases, including those connected to gang violence. Law enforcement authorities have offered significant rewards for information that could lead to arrests and prosecutions in these cases, highlighting the ongoing commitment to seeking justice for victims and their families.
