Do you know what happened to Alonzo? On the morning of October 7, 1999, 21-year-old Alonzo Johnson, a Black man from Sand Springs, Oklahoma, was found dead along a lonely stretch of Old Highway 51, about seven-tenths of a mile east of Keystone Dam. The spot lay on the edge of Tulsa County, where the river, road, and rugged land press in on each other and traffic thins out. It was there, in that isolated corridor just outside the everyday bustle of town, that authorities discovered the young man’s body and realized that a quiet,
brutal killing had taken place in the dark hours before he was found.
Investigators soon confirmed that the victim was Alonzo, a 21-year-old who lived in nearby Sand Springs and was known to friends and family by the nickname “Little Seven.” What they could see at the scene told them that whoever had brought him there had not simply abandoned him; he had been beaten and then shot to death, the violence suggesting a personal, targeted attack rather than a random accident. The rural roadway, bordered by water and woods, offered few immediate clues. There were no crowds, no obvious witnesses, just a young man whose life had been cut short and left beside a road that most people only passed through on their way to somewhere else.
From the beginning, the location worked against the investigation. The area east of Keystone Dam is sparsely traveled, especially at night, and there were no reports of a disturbance or gunfire that led police straight to a suspect. Detectives from local law enforcement agencies canvassed for information, trying to reconstruct Alonzo’s final movements and understand who he had been with before he ended up on Old Highway 51. Over the years, his case has been adopted into official cold case lists maintained by the Tulsa County Sheriff’s Office, featured by Tulsa Crime Stoppers, and profiled by Oklahoma-based cold case advocates, all of whom continue to ask the public for even the smallest lead. Yet despite those efforts, there has been no public indication that anyone has ever been arrested for Alonzo Johnson’s murder, and authorities have not named a suspect. More than two decades later, his death remains an unsolved homicide, preserved in brief case summaries and cold case archives while his killer or killers have never been formally brought to account.
