On the morning of December 3, 2007, Lawrence Bass, a 46-year-old Black man, was found deceased at an apartment complex located at 1115 Chestnut Avenue in Long Beach, California. Responding officers discovered that he had sustained multiple gunshot wounds to the head, neck, and torso. Paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene shortly after 7:40 a.m.
Lawrence Bass's death was classified as a homicide. Investigators determined that the shooting occurred during a domestic dispute. His stepfather, Henry Preston Lamar, a 45-year-old Black man, was arrested on suspicion of murder following the incident. Authorities reported that the two men had been engaged in an argument that escalated into violence.

Detectives Dennis Robbins and Dan Mendoza were assigned to the investigation.
