On a summer day in Oklahoma City, a dispute at a convenience store tragically escalated, ending the life of 17-year-old William Jackson. The young Black man was at a shop near Wilshire Boulevard and the Northwest Expressway on June 8, 2024, when an altercation broke out among several people. In the ensuing chaos, William was fatally shot, becoming the city's 37th homicide victim of the year.
Oklahoma City Police arrived at the scene just before noon to find the teenager already deceased.
Detectives began piecing together the events that led to the deadly confrontation, appealing to the public for any information that could lead to an arrest. Their investigation moved swiftly, and five days later, on June 13, 2024, an arrest was made in connection with the shooting.
Eighteen-year-old Carnell Matheri was taken into custody by police with the assistance of Crime Stoppers. He was subsequently charged with first-degree murder in the death of William Jackson. A year after the incident, in September 2025, a jury found Matheri guilty of murder. The jury recommended a sentence of life in prison for the shooting death of the teenager. His formal sentencing was scheduled for the following November.
