On December 28, 1995, 55-year-old Zenith Lawrence was shot and killed while delivering newspapers in Dayton, Ohio. Known in her neighborhood as "the paper lady," Lawrence was well-liked by the community she served. On that frigid morning, she was in her parked car on Oxford Avenue, sorting newspapers, when someone approached her vehicle and shot her in the head. Investigators believe she was a victim of being in the wrong place at the wrong time, and the motive was thought to be a robbery, as a similar crime occurred nearby shortly afterward.
Detective Doyle Burke, working with the Dayton Police Cold Case Unit, revisited Lawrence's case, and recent advances in forensic technology have provided a new avenue for investigation. Investigators are now using DNA analysis techniques not available in the mid-1990s, examining items from the scene that may yield new evidence. Despite the case being nearly three decades old, detectives remain hopeful that new leads could bring justice to Lawrence and closure to her family.
