On September 12, 2004, Gerardo Mejia-Diaz, aged 25, was one of ten victims who perished in a tragic fire at the Lincoln Park West Apartments in Columbus, Ohio. The fire, which erupted in the early morning hours, was later ruled an arson, leaving investigators to suspect foul play. Survivors reported hearing frantic yelling and pounding on doors as the blaze quickly consumed parts of the building, especially trapping those on the upper floors. Efforts by firefighters and law enforcement to control the fire were extensive, yet the flames moved rapidly, blocking stairways and primary exit routes, making escape for many impossible.
This devastating event is one of Columbus's deadliest unsolved cases, and it prompted a wide-scale investigation involving local law enforcement, the Ohio State Fire Marshal, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF). Despite extensive inquiries, the arsonist(s) remain unidentified. As of the last reports, Crime Stoppers has offered a reward for information that could help bring the responsible parties to justice. Law enforcement continues to appeal to the public for assistance, hopeful that someone with knowledge of the incident will come forward to help close this tragic case.
