On February 10, 2010, Ronnie P. Dowell, age 18, was tragically killed in a violent home invasion at his residence on McCarley Drive East in Columbus, Ohio. Ronnie was at home with two women when they heard a noise at the back door. One of the women alerted him, and Ronnie armed himself with a handgun to confront the intruder. Witnesses reported hearing multiple gunshots, and Ronnie was struck during the ensuing chaos. He later died from his injuries at Mt. Carmel West hospital.
The suspect, described inconsistently by witnesses, entered the residence, demanding "dope." When he could not find any drugs, he took some jewelry before fleeing the scene. The intruder was described as a Black male, around 5'10" to 5'11", wearing all black clothing and a bandana or ski mask, along with a blue or black duffle bag hanging across his chest. Despite ongoing investigations, the suspect has not been identified or apprehended.
Ronnie Dowell's death was heartbreaking for his family and community, particularly as he was remembered as a caring and giving person. He was also an organ donor, which allowed his death to save two other lives, a small glimmer of positivity amid the tragedy.
