On May 29, 2010, Corey Mitchell, a 34-year-old single father, was gunned down in front of his home on North Paul Lawrence Dunbar Street in Dayton, Ohio. Corey had just arrived home with his 11-year-old twins when he was ambushed. The tragic shooting took place at around 9 p.m., and Corey was killed instantly. Despite the presence of his children, the shooter showed no concern for their safety, recklessly firing shots while Corey tried to make his way from his car to the house.
One of his daughters was injured in the leg during the attack, adding further trauma to an already devastating scene.
In the weeks leading up to his death, Corey had expressed concerns to his friends and family about a tumultuous relationship he was trying to end. He felt threatened by his then-partner, who reportedly refused to let go and had even gone as far as making a duplicate key to his home. Just weeks before the shooting, someone had fired shots at Corey while he was outside his house, but he managed to escape unscathed that time. Despite the escalating threats, Corey decided to stay at his home rather than relocate for safety, a decision that ultimately cost him his life.
Following Corey’s death, his partner was arrested and charged with conspiracy to commit murder, as police believed she was involved in planning the attack. However, a Montgomery County Grand Jury declined to indict her, and her record was later cleared. Corey's family believes that the lack of an indictment was partially due to a prosecutor’s decision not to allow Corey's twins to testify before the grand jury. The investigation has since stalled, with no one being held accountable for the crime.
Authorities believe there were multiple people involved in Corey's murder—those who fired the shots, those who drove the shooter, and others who helped plan the crime. However, despite these suspicions, no substantial leads have been established that could bring justice for Corey. His mother, Carol Cranford, continues to seek answers and justice for her son, urging anyone with information to come forward. The crime remains an unsolved tragedy in Dayton, and detectives are hopeful that someone with knowledge of the incident will eventually come forward to help close the case.
