On July 29, 2010, Virgil Lee, age 18, was shot and killed in Columbus, Ohio, in an incident that resulted in one fatality and one person injured. The shooting occurred in the Hilltop neighborhood on the 700 block of South Ogden Avenue shortly after 10 p.m. When officers arrived at the scene, they found Virgil Lee unresponsive, and he was pronounced dead shortly thereafter.
Additionally, a woman was found nearby with a gunshot wound and was transported to Grant Medical Center, where her condition was reported as stable.
The suspect in the shooting, identified as 18-year-old Mehki Miller, was initially spotted by a police helicopter attempting to flee the scene in a vehicle. Miller was later apprehended after an area search. According to records from Franklin County Municipal Court, the shooting stemmed from an altercation between Miller and Lee. It is reported that Miller pulled a gun during the fight and shot Lee multiple times. He then dragged Lee's body to a detached garage before leaving the area. Miller was subsequently charged with murder.
The shooting underscores the ongoing issue of violence in the Hilltop neighborhood, and law enforcement has called upon the community to assist in providing any information that might further the investigation and help prevent future incidents of this kind.
