a man is fatally shot in a parking lot Carlton Douglas Smith, a male resident of Greensboro, North Carolina, was fatally shot on April 12, 2009. The incident occurred at approximately 4:55 A.M. when officers from the Greensboro Police Department responded to a shooting at 510 Farragut Street. Upon arrival, they discovered Carlton Smith suffering from a gunshot wound. Despite efforts to save him, he was later pronounced deceased due to his injuries.
Further investigation revealed that Carlton Smith had been walking to a
vehicle in the parking lot with a group of friends when an unidentified suspect approached them and asked for a ride. Shortly thereafter, the suspect brandished a firearm and shot Carlton Smith before taking the vehicle and fleeing the scene. The stolen vehicle was identified as a 2008 dark blue Dodge Charger with 30-day tags and 22-inch five-point wheels.
On April 17, 2009, the Darlington County Sheriff’s Department responded to a vehicle fire in the area of Turnpike Road in Darlington County. Upon extinguishing the fire, authorities determined that the burned vehicle was the same Dodge Charger stolen during the incident involving Carlton Smith. Forensic technicians from the Greensboro Police Department examined both crime scenes and collected evidence.
The suspect was described as a Black male, approximately 5’7” tall, clean-shaven, and wearing a black zip-up jacket with a hood, a light-colored shirt, and dark pants. He was estimated to be in his twenties. Despite investigative efforts, no arrests have been reported in connection with the case. Authorities continue to seek information regarding the suspect’s identity and whereabouts, offering a reward for details leading to an arrest and conviction.
