The death of 16-year-old African American Ramone George occurred following a violent encounter in Detroit, Michigan, in late July 2010. The events leading to the teenager's passing began on the afternoon of July 26, 2010. His mother, Christina George, received multiple phone calls that day which later became critical evidence. One call came from a friend's phone, followed shortly by calls from an acquaintance known as "Nell." Christina was familiar with Nell, having seen him visit her home several times that summer in a black SUV, identified as either a Tahoe or a Yukon. During one of the final conversations, she noted that Ramone sounded nervous, prompting her to alter her travel plans, although the teenager indicated he did not need to be picked up.
Around 3:00 p.m. on that same afternoon, a witness positioned at a local gas station observed a physical altercation between two males. The witness described seeing a larger male swinging at a smaller, skinny teenager who appeared to be approximately 16 or 17 years old. The larger male was observed carrying a firearm during the scuffle. The confrontation escalated when gunshots rang out, drawing the attention of bystanders. Ramone George sustained injuries during the incident and died on July 27, 2010.
Investigators linked "Nell" to Courtney Terrill Swift, identifying him as the primary suspect in the homicide. The connection was established in part through the phone records and the identification of the vehicle he was known to drive. Following the investigation, Swift was arrested and charged in connection with the teenager's death.
The case proceeded to trial in the Wayne Circuit Court. A jury ultimately found Courtney Terrill Swift guilty of second-degree murder for the killing of Ramone George. In December 2013, the Michigan Court of Appeals affirmed the conviction. Swift was sentenced to a prison term of 300 to 600 months, equating to 25 to 50 years of incarceration for the crime.
