On December 22, 2017, 36-year-old Black male Derrick Calhoun was fatally shot outside a liquor store in Detroit, Michigan. The incident occurred following an altercation inside the Mount Elliot and Charlevoix market. After the dispute, one of the individuals involved entered a gray Dodge Challenger, waited for Calhoun to exit the store, and then opened fire, striking him. The shooter fled the scene westbound on Charlevoix Avenue, colliding with another vehicle before continuing to evade capture.
