Rochelle Clifford Dopierala, aged 28, disappeared in April 1988 from New Bedford, Massachusetts. Her remains were discovered months later on December 10, 1988, by people riding ATVs in a gravel pit off Reed Road in Dartmouth, about two miles from Route 195. She was partially clothed, and it was determined that she had been beaten to death. Dopierala's case became one of several linked to the New Bedford Highway murders, a series of killings that claimed the lives of multiple women during the late 1980s. Investigators believe that many of the victims, including Dopierala, had ties to high-risk lifestyles involving drugs and sex work.
Initially, a New Bedford attorney named Kenneth Ponte was indicted for Dopierala's murder in 1990. The indictment was based on allegations that she had knowledge of Ponte's illegal activities, and he was suspected of silencing her to prevent exposure. However, the charges were dropped a year later due to insufficient evidence, leaving the case unsolved. Dopierala's death, along with the other women connected to the Highway Killer, remains an open and haunting cold case in the region.
