On a summer evening in Baltimore, 21-year-old Davron Dorsey was sitting outside the Ez-Shop Grocery store in the 3100 block of West Belvedere Avenue when his life was cut short. It was just before 9:30 p.m. on June 27, 2019, when a male on a fat tire bike allegedly rode past the store. About 20 minutes later, the same individual, having changed his clothes, returned and opened fire, shooting Dorsey twice.
Responding police officers found Dorsey with multiple gunshot wounds. He was rushed to a nearby hospital but ultimately succumbed to his injuries. An autopsy later revealed that Dorsey had suffered a grazed gunshot wound to the left side of his head and a fatal gunshot wound to his back that damaged his spine, lungs, and aorta. The cause of his death was ruled a homicide.
The investigation into the targeted shooting led Baltimore police to a suspect, Tracy Jones, who was 16 years old at the time of the incident. Jones was subsequently arrested and charged as an adult with first-degree murder and firearm offenses.
During the trial, the prosecution presented evidence suggesting that Jones had set out to execute Dorsey, though a motive was not established. The defense, however, questioned the thoroughness of the police investigation, pointing out that two alleged witnesses were not interviewed and that the murder weapon was never recovered.
In December 2021, after a week-long trial, a hung jury resulted in a mistrial being declared. A retrial for Tracy Jones was scheduled for September of the following year.
