A gas station worker is found deceased In the early morning hours of June 20, 1975, Robert McKee, a 35-year-old White/Caucasian male, was working the overnight shift at McNally's Texaco station in Newport, Maine. A married father of two and a respected sixth-grade teacher at the Vickery School in nearby Pittsfield, McKee had taken on the summer job to earn extra money for his family. The gas station, located on a quiet stretch of road off Interstate 95, was the only all-night service station between Bangor and Waterville.
At
approximately 1:00 a.m., a Maine State Police trooper stopped for gas and saw McKee, finding nothing out of the ordinary. However, around 3:30 a.m., a customer discovered McKee's body inside the station. He had been shot multiple times in the head with a small-caliber weapon. The motive appeared to be robbery, as about $400 was missing from the cash register, along with some records and 35 gallons of gasoline.
Despite an ongoing investigation by the Maine State Police, the murder of Robert McKee remains unsolved. In 1977, investigators received a tip regarding the location of the murder weapon and excavated a lawn in Pittsfield, but the search proved fruitless. Over the decades, law enforcement has periodically renewed public pleas for information, particularly on the anniversary of the homicide, in the hope of generating new leads. No suspects have ever been publicly named, and no arrests have been made in connection with the case, leaving the community and McKee's family without answers for decades.
