Do you know who murdered Charles? On a cold morning in Kansas City, Kansas, the life of Charles W. "Chuck" Thompson, a 56-year-old Caucasian male, was brought to an abrupt and violent end. It was December 21, 1987, and the prominent lawyer and influential chairman of the Wyandotte County Democratic Party had arranged to meet a prospective client. The meeting, however, was a fatal setup.
Thompson was discovered on the sidewalk in front of Jalisco's Restaurant at 5000 State Avenue, having been shot multiple times in the upper torso. Investigators believe the attack began while he was still seated in his car.
The evidence painted a grim picture of a calculated assassination. An unknown man had contacted Thompson, promising a $2,000 payment to retain his legal services, luring him to the restaurant parking lot. Once there, his assailant fired six shots from a. 38-caliber handgun, shattering the car window and striking him with three bullets. Though grievously wounded, Thompson managed to exit his vehicle and stagger towards the locked doors of the restaurant before collapsing. Despite the brazen nature of the attack, which occurred in broad daylight, no witnesses came forward, and no fingerprints or shell casings were recovered from the scene.
The investigation, initially handled by the Kansas City Metro Squad before being turned over to the Kansas Bureau of Investigation, soon pointed towards a planned "murder for hire." A significant motive appeared to be political. Thompson was a formidable figure in local politics, known for his relentless approach which had garnered him numerous victories but also a considerable number of enemies. Just days before his murder, at a Christmas party, Thompson had reportedly told three fellow Democratic officeholders, "You're gone, you're gone and you're gone," signaling his intent to find candidates to run against them. This confrontation fueled speculation that his death was a direct result of his political activities.
Despite the strong evidence of a contract killing and the clear political undertones, the case has remained unsolved for decades. No suspects have ever been publicly identified, and no arrests have been made. The murder of Charles Thompson remains one of the most significant open cases for the Kansas Bureau of Investigation.
