Marcy Jo Andrews, a 24-year-old woman from the northwest side of Chicago, had a history of struggles but was in a period of transition and hope in early 1984. Having previously battled with alcohol and drug addiction, she had completed a nine-month rehabilitation program and was sober for a time, even enrolling in college courses with aspirations of becoming a counselor.
