Discovery of the Remains

On July 21, 1980, a group of electrical workers stumbled upon human skeletal remains buried in a shallow grave along a set of power lines near Eklutna, a small community just outside Anchorage, Alaska. The location, approximately one mile south of South Eklutna Lake Road, was heavily wooded and remote, making the discovery both unexpected and chilling. The condition of the remains suggested they had been there for several months, with only a small amount of soft tissue still present.

Autopsy and Initial Investigation

The remains were transported to the Alaska State Medical Examiner’s Office for examination. The forensic analysis determined that the victim was a young female, estimated to be between 16 and 25 years old. She stood between 4 feet 11 inches and 5 feet 3 inches tall, with long hair that was light brown with a reddish tint. Due to the advanced state of decomposition, her eye color and weight couldn't be ascertained. The cause of death was identified as a stab wound to the back, indicating a homicide.

Personal Effects and Clothing

At the time of discovery, the victim was clothed in a light-colored sleeveless knit sweater, blue jeans, and a brown leather hip-length jacket. Notably, she wore red or reddish-brown knee-high high-heeled vinyl boots with a nylon zipper on the side. Several pieces of distinctive jewelry were found with her remains, including a wide copper bracelet adorned with a stamped floral design and three turquoise stones, a turquoise and brown shell necklace featuring a heart pendant and twisted metal bead spacers, gold-plated twisted metal hoop earrings, a white shell ring with a brown inset, and a gold-plated ladies' chain-linked Timex wristwatch with a brown face and white hands. A pack of Salem matches was also discovered in the pocket of her jacket, suggesting she might have been a smoker.

The Moniker "Eklutna Annie"

In the absence of any identification and with no matching missing persons reports, investigators dubbed the unidentified woman "Eklutna Annie," drawing from the nearby Eklutna area where her remains were found. This placeholder name has persisted for decades, symbolizing both her tragic end and the mystery surrounding her true identity....Read More
