Nicholas Robert Patterson, a 26-year-old member of the Atwamsini band of the Pit River Tribe, vanished on January 4, 2020, in the Hat Creek area of Shasta County, California. Known for his deep connection to his Native heritage and his role as a unifying figure within his family, Nicholas's sudden disappearance sent shockwaves through his community. His family reported him missing on January 9, 2020, after days without contact—a silence that was uncharacteristic for Nicholas, who maintained regular communication with his relatives.
In the weeks following his disappearance, Nicholas's family, along with members of the Pit River Tribe and other Indigenous communities, organized extensive search efforts. They scoured the Hat Creek area, distributed flyers, and utilized social media platforms to raise awareness. A Facebook group titled "Help Find Nick Patterson" garnered nearly 300 members, all dedicated to finding Nicholas. Despite these efforts, leads were scarce, and the family faced the painful reality of not knowing what had happened to their loved one.
On March 20, 2021, over a year after Nicholas's disappearance, a vigil was held at the U.S. District Court on Bechelli Lane. Family, friends, and community members gathered to honor Nicholas and to bring attention to the broader issue of Missing and Murdered Indigenous People (MMIP). Speakers at the event highlighted the systemic challenges faced by Indigenous communities, including jurisdictional complexities and a lack of resources, which often hinder investigations into missing persons cases.
In May 2024, a hiker discovered skeletal remains in a remote area of Modoc County, California. After nearly a year of forensic analysis, including DNA testing and the identification of distinctive tattoos honoring his Pit River Tribe heritage, the remains were confirmed in March 2025 to be those of Nicholas Patterson. This discovery brought a measure of closure to his family, ending years of uncertainty and anguish. ...Read More
