Unraveling the Portsmouth Tragedy of October 2021
The Vanished Trip

On October 9, 2021, 27‑year‑old Savannah Jane Grant of Fairmont, West Virginia, set out on a camping and boating getaway to Portsmouth Island in North Carolina’s Outer Banks, accompanied by her boyfriend, Jason Quickle, roommate/friend John Pierson, and Jason’s dog, Poseidon. After camping on the remote barrier island, the group attempted to return to Ocracoke Island via canoe and a john boat amid deteriorating coastal weather. According to reports, a sudden storm surge struck during their exit, causing the canoe to capsize. While Jason and John survived, Grant was swept away by the powerful currents and has not been seen since.

Emergency Response and Rescue Efforts

A 911 call came in at approximately 4:15 p.m. on October 9, reporting the accident. The U.S. Coast Guard launched an expansive search operation spanning over 1,600 square nautical miles. An MH‑60 Jayhawk helicopter located Jason near Drum Inlet early the next morning and airlifted him to Carteret Hospital. John was discovered on Great Island, having swum ashore, also taken to the same hospital. Despite this success, Savannah and the dog Poseidon remained missing.

Suspension and Transition to Missing Person Case

After a 73‑hour search, authorities called off the active rescue. Capt. Matt Baer of Coast Guard Sector North Carolina stated the decision was one of the “toughest” responsibilities, conveying heartfelt sympathy to the family. Carteret County Sheriff’s Office then formally classified Savannah as a missing person, presumably lost at sea, having been entered into the National Crime Information Center database. Investigators found no evidence of foul play following interviews and analysis of the survivors' statements.

Family, Friends, and Their Fight for Answers

Savannah’s uncle, James Weekley, along with other relatives, traveled to Ocracoke in mid‑October to support the search. Even after the authorities concluded operations, they engaged a private investigator based in Nags Head to continue efforts. Family friend Kristen Federer described Savannah in emotional terms: “sweet, funny, loving… always laughing,” and pleaded with the community to assist—urging fishermen, drone operators, and residents to scan the Inlet area....Read More
