Keith Criner, affectionately known as “Moose” among his peers, was born on March 28, 1966, in California. He found his calling in the treacherous waters of Alaska, dedicating his life to the demanding world of commercial crab fishing. His robust presence and unwavering work ethic made him a respected figure among the crews that braved the Bering Sea's perils. Despite the inherent dangers of the profession, Keith's commitment to the sea was unwavering, embodying the resilience and fortitude characteristic of seasoned fishermen.
On January 6, 2009, while aboard the 109-foot fishing vessel Seabrooke, tragedy struck. Approximately 22 miles northwest of Cold Bay, Alaska, Keith became entangled in a crab pot line during routine operations and was pulled overboard into the icy waters of the Bering Sea . The crew's immediate response and the subsequent search efforts underscored the perilous nature of their occupation.
The U.S. Coast Guard launched an extensive search operation, deploying two helicopters and a C-130 aircraft from Air Station Kodiak. Despite covering an area of 132 square miles over multiple sorties, the search yielded no results. Adverse weather conditions, including low cloud ceilings and snow squalls, hampered visibility and search efforts . After exhaustive attempts, the search was suspended, and Keith was declared lost at sea.
Keith's untimely passing resonated deeply within the fishing community and his family. He is survived by his father, Raymond Criner, and numerous siblings and relatives who cherished his memory . His name is etched among those honored at memorials dedicated to fishermen who have perished at sea, serving as a solemn reminder of the sacrifices made by those in the industry....Read More
