On the evening of May 31, 2020, 17-year-old Ian Spalding of North Bend, Oregon, set out with friends to enjoy the ocean view at the cliffs of Norton Gulch near Sunset Bay in Coos Bay. What began as a casual outing turned tragic when Ian slipped from a rock bluff, falling approximately 50 feet into the Pacific Ocean. Witnesses reported that he struck his head during the fall and was seen floating in and out of consciousness before disappearing beneath the waves.
The Coos County Sheriff's Office, along with the U.S. Coast Guard and local fire departments from Charleston, North Bend, and Coos Bay, launched an extensive search operation. A Coast Guard helicopter and ship scoured the area throughout the night, while over 100 volunteers, including friends, family, and community members, joined the search the following day. Despite these efforts, strong currents and poor visibility hindered the search, and Ian's body was not recovered.
Ian was a standout athlete at North Bend High School, serving as the starting quarterback and linebacker for the football team and as the starting catcher for the baseball team. His coaches and peers remembered him as a dedicated leader and a person of strong character. In the wake of his disappearance, the school opened its campus to provide counseling and support for grieving students.
In honor of Ian's memory, a GoFundMe campaign was established to support his family and fund a scholarship in his name. The community rallied around this initiative, raising thousands of dollars. Additionally, local businesses, including The Human Bean coffee shop where Ian was scheduled to start working, organized fundraisers to contribute to the memorial fund. ...Read More
