On October 29, 2017, Gregory Hawkins, a 20-year-old resident of New Orleans' Hollygrove neighborhood, was fatally shot just blocks away from the Hollygrove Church of Christ, where he had been an active member. Hawkins had left the Sunday worship service approximately 15 minutes early, appearing troubled, according to church leaders. Shortly thereafter, neighbors reported hearing multiple gunshots around 2 p.m. Responding officers found Hawkins with at least one gunshot wound; he was transported to a hospital, where he later died. As of now, no arrests have been made, and the motive behind the shooting remains unknown.
Gregory Hawkins was more than just a church attendee; he was a cherished member of the Hollygrove Church of Christ community. He had been involved with the church since its inception, participating in various activities and serving as a role model for younger members. Charles Marsalis, one of the church's founders, recalled, "Greg had been with us since we started. We practically raised him up here." Hawkins was known for his quiet demeanor and dedication to his faith, often seen singing during Sunday services.
The Hollygrove Church of Christ was established by Charles and Angela Marsalis in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. Recognizing the need for spiritual guidance and community support in the high-crime Hollygrove neighborhood, the Marsalises began hosting Bible studies on a relative's porch, offering snacks and soft drinks to local youth. Their efforts culminated in the formation of the church, which has since become a cornerstone of the community, providing not only religious services but also mentorship and support for residents.
The news of Hawkins' death sent shockwaves through the Hollygrove community. Church leaders and members expressed profound grief over the loss of a young man who had shown such promise and dedication. Kirk Garrison, minister at the Carrollton Avenue Church of Christ, which sponsors the Hollygrove church, stated, "He wasn't out there ripping and running. He was a good kid." The tragedy underscored the persistent challenges faced by communities like Hollygrove, where violence can abruptly end lives full of potential. ...Read More
