Discovery of the Crime Scene
In the early hours of October 8, 1995, a passerby made a grim discovery along Caliente Road, approximately one mile north of Oak Hill Road in Oak Hills, California. The bodies of two young women, later identified as 20-year-olds Teresa Mendez and Valerie Ortiz from El Monte, were found at the scene. Both had sustained gunshot wounds, with evidence suggesting they were shot at the location where they were found. Ortiz was pronounced dead at the scene, while Mendez was airlifted to Desert Hospital in Palm Springs, where she succumbed to her injuries shortly after arrival.
Victims' Backgrounds and Last Known Movements
Teresa Mendez and Valerie Ortiz were both residents of El Monte, a city in Los Angeles County. On the evening of October 7, 1995, they were last seen alive between 8:30 and 11:30 p.m. in El Monte. Details about their activities during this time remain unclear, and it is unknown how they ended up in Oak Hills, a desert community located approximately 70 miles east of El Monte. ...Read More
