On September 24, 2011, what began as a celebratory fishing trip off the coast of Honolulu ended in tragedy. Kenan Knieriem, a 58-year-old investment adviser and newlywed, vanished into the Pacific Ocean, leaving behind a grieving family and a community searching for answers. The incident occurred approximately 13 miles south of Waikiki, during a fishing excursion aboard the vessel Ikaika. Accompanying him were his wife of two weeks, Debi Ozawa, and two friends, Rosina Ho and Amalia Johles.
According to accounts from those on board, the group had departed from the Hawaii Kai marina early that morning, aiming to fish near Penguin Bank. Around 8 a.m., an alarm signaled a fish on the line. As Knieriem attempted to gaff a large mahimahi, he lost his balance and fell overboard. Despite immediate rescue efforts by Ho and Johles, who jumped into the water, and attempts by Debi to maneuver the boat closer, the strong currents and rough seas hindered their efforts. Knieriem was last seen bobbing in the water, unresponsive, before disappearing beneath the waves.
Kenan Knieriem was more than a successful professional; he was a pillar in his community. Serving as the senior vice president for investments at Merrill Lynch and managing the Honolulu office, he was respected in the financial sector. Beyond his career, Knieriem was deeply involved in youth sports, particularly soccer. His legacy includes the establishment of the Kenan Knieriem Memorial Golf Tournament, which supports leadership through soccer, reflecting his commitment to mentoring young athletes.
Following the incident, the U.S. Coast Guard launched an extensive search operation, covering 117 square miles over ten hours. Despite these efforts, no trace of Knieriem was found. The investigation, while thorough, concluded without definitive answers, leaving the cause of the accident as a tragic misfortune at sea. The lack of closure has been a source of enduring pain for his family and friends....Read More
