On a December evening in 2018, the life of 62-year-old Shane Alan Crawford of Prairie Grove, Arkansas, was cut short by a fatal encounter on a quiet dirt road. Crawford, a man remembered by loved ones for his passion for music, camping, and fishing, was shot in the back. The events that followed would piece together a tragic and abrupt end to his life, leaving a community in search of answers.
Wounded and in desperate need of help, Crawford managed to flag down a passing truck on South
Applehill Road. The driver, initially uncertain of the gravity of the situation and thinking Crawford might be intoxicated, still offered assistance, driving him to a residence in the nearby town of Lincoln before realizing the severe nature of his injury and calling 911. Crawford was then rushed to Washington Regional Medical Center, but tragically succumbed to his gunshot wound.
The investigation into Shane Crawford's death quickly led authorities to a residence on Applehill Road, where they encountered 75-year-old William Garland Smith, also a resident of Prairie Grove. Smith, who was intoxicated at the time, made spontaneous statements to the deputies, admitting his involvement in the shooting. Inside the home, a. 22 caliber revolver was recovered.
Following his arrest on a charge of first-degree murder, William Garland Smith was booked into the Washington County Jail. During a later interview, once sober, he confessed to shooting Crawford in the back with the revolver after a fight had broken out between them. At the time of the initial reports, the specific motive for the altercation and shooting remained unclear, as did the nature of the relationship, if any, between Crawford and his assailant.
