On August 11, 2024, in Sharpsburg, North Carolina, 27-year-old Kiera Massenburg was tragically killed in a series of violent events perpetrated by her boyfriend, 32-year-old DaQuan Marcato Jones. The incident began in the early morning hours when Jones arrived at a residence on Weaver Circle, where Massenburg was staying with friends. An altercation ensued, during which Jones shot Massenburg, their 6-year-old daughter Zoey Jones, and two family friends, identified as 27-year-old Makyah Page and 30-year-old Devonte Ricks. Page and Ricks sustained serious injuries but survived the attack.

After the initial shootings, Jones fled the scene with Massenburg and Zoey in his vehicle. He later dropped Zoey off at a home in Nash County; she was transported to a hospital but succumbed to her injuries the following evening. Authorities located Jones' vehicle at a residence on Jamie Road in Battleboro, where they found Massenburg deceased in the backseat. As law enforcement approached, they heard a gunshot from inside the house and subsequently discovered Jones had died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

This tragedy occurred just one day after Jones was released from the Edgecombe County Detention Center, where he had been held on charges of assault inflicting serious bodily injury stemming from a July 2024 incident in which he allegedly punched Massenburg, causing significant injuries. The couple had a documented history of domestic violence, including previous arrests and charges against Jones for threats and assaults toward Massenburg.

In the wake of this devastating event, a GoFundMe campaign was established to assist with funeral expenses for Kiera and Zoey. The community mourned the loss of a devoted mother and her bright, innocent daughter, whose lives were tragically cut short by domestic violence.
