On May 23, 1980, Vernice Ruby Craig, aged 46, was found dead in Immokalee, Florida. Her death was treated as a homicide, and the investigation revealed that she had suffered blunt-force trauma. Vernice's body was discovered in a secluded area, contributing to the difficulty in finding immediate witnesses or suspects. Despite efforts by the Collier County Sheriff’s Office, the case went cold, as it lacked significant leads that could identify the perpetrator.
Craig's death became part of a broader investigation when authorities conducted an exhumation of several unidentified bodies from Lake Trafford Cemetery in Immokalee in an effort to identify victims of unsolved homicides from the area. This project was marked as one of the largest exhumation efforts ever conducted in Florida, and while it led to identifying other victims, it has not yet led to significant breakthroughs regarding Craig’s case.
The Collier County Sheriff’s Office continues to seek information that could help resolve this cold case, and they remain hopeful that advancements in forensic analysis or public tips might eventually lead to answers.
