A summer stroll with his family turned into a fatal encounter for Nathan Morris, a 35-year-old male resident of Canton, Michigan. On Saturday, August 10, 2024, Morris was walking with his wife and two young daughters in their neighborhood on Cornell Street when a seemingly trivial event escalated into a deadly confrontation. The incident began when one of Morris's daughters touched the mulch in the yard of a neighbor.
This act allegedly enraged the neighbor, who then emerged from his home with a handgun and began threatening the family.
Sensing the gravity of the situation, Morris sent his family home while he stayed behind in an attempt to de-escalate the conflict with his neighbor. Despite his efforts, the neighbor fired multiple shots, striking the unarmed Morris in the street. Police and emergency responders arrived at the scene around 11:48 a.m. to find Morris suffering from gunshot wounds. He was transported to a local hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries. An autopsy later confirmed that Morris died from multiple gunshot wounds.
The suspect, identified as 47-year-old Devereaux Christopher Johnson, barricaded himself inside his home immediately following the shooting. After a standoff with police, Johnson eventually surrendered to authorities. He was taken into custody and has since been charged with first-degree murder, felon in possession of a firearm, and two counts of felony firearm. Johnson, who has a prior criminal record including a 2005 sexual assault conviction in Nevada, is being held without bond. During his arraignment, a judge ordered a competency exam to assess his mental state, and a plea of not guilty was entered on his behalf. Authorities are also investigating Johnson's potential involvement in a non-fatal freeway shooting in Indiana.
