On April 3, 1990, the decomposed body of 57-year-old Patricia Ann Minnis was found by a prison work crew along U.S. 41 East near Everglades City, in the Big Cypress National Preserve, Florida. The discovery was made under heavy brush, approximately 22 miles south of the road. Patricia Minnis’ body was in a state of advanced decomposition, and an autopsy revealed that she had died from blunt force trauma to the head. It was estimated that she had been dead for about three weeks prior to being discovered.
The initial investigation failed to identify Minnis, and her body went unclaimed for years. At the time of her disappearance, Minnis had been traveling in an RV across the United States with her husband. He claimed that Minnis had left him for another man during their travels through Southwest Florida, which raised no immediate alarms. It was not until her purse was found in their RV that Minnis’ daughter became suspicious and reported her missing to the authorities. Despite early attempts, including facial reconstruction from her skull in 1999, no one came forward to identify her.
It wasn't until 2015, 25 years after the initial discovery, that advances in forensic science led to Minnis being positively identified through DNA submitted by her daughter. The DNA match came after the University of North Texas Center for Human Identification compared Minnis' daughter’s DNA to samples from the remains. This breakthrough allowed detectives to finally close the identification phase of the case, but the question of who was responsible for her death remains unanswered. Although a potential person of interest has been developed, the investigation into Minnis' death continues, and authorities have made appeals to the public for any information that could help solve the case and bring justice to her family.
Minnis' story highlights the challenges of solving cold cases, especially in the absence of timely identification.
