In the early hours of a Wednesday morning in Jennings, Louisiana, the life of Deontrae Edwards, a 25-year-old male, was brought to a violent and tragic end. On July 5, 2023, Edwards was in an apartment on McKinley Street when the residence was forcibly entered. Inside, an altercation broke out, culminating in gunfire that left Edwards with multiple fatal wounds. He was discovered by police officers in the living room of the apartment.
At the time of the shooting, a woman and her nine-month-old baby were also present in the home but were not physically harmed. The incident was a shock to the community, not only for its brutality but because the alleged perpetrator was a member of Edwards' own family.
The investigation swiftly pointed to Ketron Latralle Alexander, the 20-year-old cousin of the victim. Authorities learned that Alexander had allegedly broken into the apartment, which belonged to his ex-girlfriend, leading to the deadly confrontation with Edwards. Following the shooting, Alexander fled the scene, prompting a search by law enforcement. He was later discovered hiding in the closet of another residence on Winnie Street and was taken into custody without further incident. The tragedy was compounded by the fact that Deontrae Edwards was still in the process of recovering from a previous shooting that had occurred just weeks prior, in late May, during a fight at a local park. Following his arrest, Ketron Latralle Alexander faced a series of serious charges, including second-degree murder, home invasion, domestic abuse with child endangerment, and violation of a protective order. He was subsequently held in custody without bond. The death of Deontrae Edwards was reported to be one of several recent shootings in the city that authorities believed could be connected to gang-related activities, adding another layer of concern for the community.
