On October 20, 2024, Jesse Kendall, an 18-year-old senior at Elgin High School, was fatally shot during a violent robbery while on his way to a Lil Durk concert at the United Center in Chicago. Kendall and his girlfriend had driven from Elgin and parked their car a few blocks away from the venue. As they walked towards the United Center, they were approached by four individuals, two on bicycles and two on foot, who were wearing masks and demanded their belongings at gunpoint.
The encounter turned violent when Kendall attempted to protect himself and his girlfriend. The robbers pistol-whipped Kendall, and a struggle ensued. During this altercation, one of the suspects opened fire, striking Kendall multiple times in the chest, stomach, neck, and arm. One bullet pierced his heart. Two other bystanders, a 15-year-old boy and a 19-year-old man, were also shot and taken to Stroger Hospital. The 15-year-old was in good condition, while the 19-year-old was in critical condition.
Kendall was transported to Stroger Hospital, where he was pronounced dead early Monday morning. His family and community were devastated by the loss, describing Kendall as a kind, family-oriented person with a passion for cars. He was active in the auto shop at Elgin High School, and the school plans to dedicate the automotive wing, including a mural, to his memory.
The incident occurred in the 100 block of North Wolcott Avenue, near West Warren Boulevard and Maypole Avenue, approximately two blocks from the United Center. As of the latest reports, no suspects are in custody, and the Chicago Police Department is continuing to investigate the robbery and murder. The community has set up a GoFundMe to help Kendall's family with funeral and other expenses, which has raised over $7,000 towards a $10,000 goal.
Kendall's family and friends have expressed their grief and are calling for increased surveillance around the United Center and more policing of unlicensed and illegal guns on the streets. The community is planning to celebrate Kendall's memory with a car meet at Elgin High School.
