On January 28, 2024, a tragic series of events unfolded in Palm Bay, Florida, resulting in the deaths of four individuals, including Sally Joan Hoeffner, who was 69 years old. The incident began with a domestic disturbance at the home of Brandon Kapas and his grandfather, William Kapas. Brandon Kapas, a 24-year-old suspect, shot and killed his grandfather following the disturbance.
After the initial shooting, Kapas fled the scene and proceeded to the home of retired Catholic priest Father Robert "Bob" Hoeffner and his sister, Sally Hoeffner. Both Father Hoeffner and Sally Hoeffner were found dead at their residence, with the homicides attributed to Kapas.
The Palm Bay police responded to the area after being called to investigate the domestic disturbance. Upon arriving, officers pursued Kapas as he fled to nearby homes. During the pursuit, two rounds of gunfire erupted, resulting in two Palm Bay police officers being wounded. The officers eventually closed in on Kapas and, in response to his actions, fired several rounds, ultimately killing him.
The community was deeply affected by these events, particularly given Father Hoeffner's well-known status as a retired priest who had served at St. Joseph Catholic Community in Palm Bay. He had retired in 2016 and was highly respected within the community, having connections with law enforcement and firefighting personnel.
Bishop John Noonan of the Orlando Diocese issued a statement mourning the loss of the four lives and extending prayers to their families. The incident had a significant impact on the community, with neighbors reporting hearing multiple gunshots and seeing the aftermath of the shootings near Boeing Street and Emerson Drive.
The investigation into the connection between Kapas and his victims was ongoing, with Palm Bay detectives questioning witnesses to determine the motives behind the homicides. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement also assisted in the investigation at the request of Palm Bay Police Chief Mariano Augello. The two wounded police officers were reported to have non-life-threatening injuries and were recovering from their ordeal.
